Abstract

This course covers important issues relating to the management of information systems and e-commerce. It deals with strategic information systems , organisational applications, managerial and decision support systems and implementing and managing information systems for e-commerce.

The primary aim of the course is to provide knowledge of how information systems can be used to advantage in modern organizations and to equip students for management responsibility in the context of information systems and e-commerce.

During the semester students will learn about different types of information systems, such as knowledge management and e-commerce systems.  This will allow students to understand the potential benefits these systems can attain.

The course is concerned with the managerial and organization uses of information technology, rather than the technology itself. However, a general understanding of technical issues is important, particularly the technical infrastructure needed to support applications such as e-commerce.

A feature of the course is the “hands-on” activities and case studies offered. The reason for emphasizing concrete activities and case study examination is that engagement in concrete activities, even if relatively simple, provides a good basis for learning and appreciation of how principles apply in the real world.
